Forum Upgrade

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that we will be undertaking a major upgrade of the forum software this evening.

This includes a brand new look for WNG (though not too radical), and will enable some new and improved features which we will bring online in due course.

Sorry for the short notice, but this place will be unavailable from about 10pm tonight while we make the changes. I'm sure you've all got better things to be doing on a Friday night anyway... Should hopefully only take an hour or so, then all will be revealed.

Thanks in advance for your patience - we hope you like the new look

Cheers,

A Statement From The Admin Team

Just to be clear on this...

whyitsguernsey has NOTHING to do with this site, it was setup following one member falling out with the admin team of this site (he broke some rules). They have been joined by one other member from here providing some tech. support.

This site was setup in January 2009 after the old and original whyguernsey.com site was closed by its founder and the members wanted a new home.

We appreciate that people are free to do as they wish and there is plenty of room on the internet to cater for all tastes.

However, it is a little bit sad that the new site could not come up with its own unique name and ensured that the two sites kept their own identity.

Please be assured that WhyNotGuernsey is and will continue to be here and grow for all our members - we still have a number of enhancements planned for the site in the near future.

If you have any concerns or comments please either post them on a topic or please PM me or any of the admin team.

Thank you

Martini

The WNG Admin team are shocked and deeply saddened to have heard that the former WhyGuernsey moderator, Martini has recently passed away.

Most of the admin team worked alongside Marty on the precursor to this site and knew him personally.

Many of our members will remember him and his posts on WhyGuernsey although may not have knowingly met or known him in real life. It is however, without doubt that Marty had a direct and far reaching influence on the personality and success of WhyGuernsey and the online community which developed during its time, which has continued into the membership and success of WhyNotGuernsey this year.

Martini's influence extended beyond his role as a moderator - under his alter-ego of Suicide Jockey, he was also responsible for the galleries of pub and nightlife pictures which featured on WhyGuernsey which helped to bring many more members to the forum.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Martini's family and friends for this sad and untimely loss and would like to acknowledge our sincere thanks for the difference he has made to our online lives.

Server Problems

Dear all,

This morning, our Webserver decided to stop serving web pages from about 04:50, making WNG unavailable.

This was fixed at 11:00 this morning in true IT fashion with a press of the virtual big red button to restart it!

There is no indication that we have been hacked or anything else sinister - it seems to be just one of those things. However, if you do notice anything strange or out of place, please let me or another of the Admins know.

Apologies for the break in service!

What the paper says, new section on WNG

From today we have a new section and a new idea!

The idea is to review what the Guernsey Press have on their front page. Discuss the subject and also comment on the standard and the way it has been written.

You can also in this new section start threads on anything in the Paper or indeed in the other media outlets.

Anyone can start topics, if linking or using data off the paper's site (www.thisisguernsey.com) please provide a link back. Be useful to post the link once the story is online for those that do not have access to the Press.

Reason for this? Just trying to encourage some debate.

Hope you enjoy this, any ideas do please let me know via PM.

PM Spam

Dear all,

The software used on our forum has recently been the subject of attacks by spammers. A patch has been recently released to overcome this, which we have installed on the WNG site.

One side effect of this however is that there is now flood-control on the sending of PMs within the forum. You will now only be able to send a Private Message once every 2 minutes - however hopefully this won't disadvantage too many of you.

Fortunately WNG has not been subject to any SPAM attacks. However we have noticed a couple of dodgy registrations recently which have been clear attempts to exploit this potential loophole.

We will remain vigilant for these attempts, but if you notice any abuse of the PM system or anything else strange (other than Stroppy's posts), please notify any of the Admin team.

Thanks,

Legal information

Defamation, libel and slander

Defamation is a term used to describe libel and slander a brief description of each follows:

Defamation is the communication of a false statement, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may cause an individual, business, product or group to suffer harm.
Libel is classed as written, printed or fixed medium defamatory statements, often seen in magazines and newspapers and more recently in emails, websites and online forums.
Slander involves the making of defamatory statements by a transitory (non-fixed) representation (usually oral (spoken word))

Under the UK defamation law a person is defamed if someone makes a statement about them that would then cause a ‘right-thinking’ person who read that statement:

•	to think worse of the person whom the statement is about;
•	to expose that person to hatred, ridicule or contempt;
•	to cause that person to be shunned or avoided

Examples of defamatory statements about a person: gold-digger, adulterer, alcoholic, drug user, racist, insanitary, insolvent, diseased, corrupt, bully

Prosecution
In terms of prosecution, if a person wishes to bring a case of libel against an individual they need not show that they have suffered actual loss. In the case of slander, that person would need to prove that they have suffered actual loss. I.E. loss of job or loss of business.

What does that mean to you as a member?
You must be aware that when posting, if your statements or comments are not founded on truth or justifiable, that you may be subject to prosecution. In the past members of forums have hidden behind their login / usernames but the courts will look to ISPs in order to obtain IP addresses used and ultimately the person behind the IP address.

A guilty verdict could lead to a very hefty fine and possible imprisonment.

Whynotguernsey.com accepts no liability for any of the posts on the forum and will co-operate with the courts should a request for information be received. We ask that all members consider their comments before posting to the site.

Any comment found to be of a defamatory nature will be removed at the earliest opportunity. As whynotguernsey.com is intended as a community forum we ask all members to remain vigilant and use the report function available to them on the forum, should they come across any posts from other members which they consider to be defamatory.
